Plastics play a major role in sustainable construction. This encompasses PVC windows, plastic foam insulation or plastic water pipes.

  • If buildings across Europe were fitted out to the current EU standards it would save almost 500 million tonnes of CO2 each year. Plastics foams provide excellent insulative properties and are very cost effective.
  • Expanded Polystyrene Insulation saves energy. 1kg oil used to make this insulation will save the equivalent of 75 kg oil for heating over twenty five years.
  • Plastics pipes use less energy to produce than concrete or iron and being lightweight they save on transport costs and emissions. The replacement of Victorian pipes in London with new plastic pipes reduces leaks and saves significant amounts of water. The energy needed to cleanse and distribute drinking water through the system is also reduced.
